Menopause Fact - What Menopause Is And Isn't
According to the Council of Affiliated Menopause Societies (CAMS), menopause is "The permanent cessation of menstruation resulting from the loss of ovarian follicular activity". In a simple term, after you have your last period, you enter menopause. When you are approaching your menopause, your periods may become les regular and occur at greater intervals.
Natural Versus Induced Menopause
In fact, there are multiple types of menopause, the common one is called "Natural Menopause", and other forms of menopause which brought by other factors. Often, these types of menopause occur much earlier than a natural menopause. Some women even describe them as an "instant menopause," because there is no real transition period into them. This type of menopause occurs when a woman has changes in her estrogen levels that are unrelated to the normal changes of aging. It is often called premature menopause because it tends to occur earlier than usual, sometimes even in young adulthood.
Surgical menopause occurs when a woman has her ovaries surgically removed for some kind of medical reason. Typical medical causes can include ovarian cancer or endometriosis, a chronic inflammation of the female sex organs. This type of menopause is also called "induced menopause." It might also occur if the ovaries were damaged by chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
Some estimates indicate that one in four women enters an induced or premature menopause. Because the onset of induced menopause is so abrupt those women have no gradual adjustment period to prepare for postmenopausal changes. Women who have had both ovaries surgically removed, for example, may experience dramatic, abrupt menopausal symptoms, such as severe hot flashes or vaginal dryness.
